Rock Name

Rock Salt: Made of the mineral Halite. Formed as shallow seas evaporate leaving large deposits. Enormous amounts of rock salt are found in New York. It is mines and used in food processing, and various chemical processes. By far, most salt is used to spread on roads in the winter.

 

Rock Gypsum: Made of the mineral gypsum or selenite, the most important use today is in the manufacture of plaster which is used to make drywall. Chances are the walls of your home are made from this material.

 

 

 

Dolostone: Made of dolomite. Major use: As a building material and crushed, it is added to concrete to make high-strength blends.

 

 

 

Limestone: Made of calcite. Used as a building material. It is a key ingredient in cement.

 

 

 

 

 

Bituminous Coal: Mostly carbon with various impurities. Burned to produce electricity.
