Shale
Shale is a clastic (made of particles cemented together) sedimentary rock. In this case the particles are clay. As can be seen in the Grain Size column on page 7 or on the Water Velocity graph on page 6, clay is defined as particles less than 0.0004 cm. in diameter. Shale is an extremely fine grain rock which is often found to contain large amounts of oil or natural gas trapped in the rock.
